The Klassic Note Review 2024.04

I promised I will be back with another CD review after last month we are just on delay for a month just like how Japanese magazines are with their edition naming, but this is we are on a roll right now with these music reviews!! Ah hey, what can I say, I have not been generous but then again the good releases have been increasing, so screw you guys RyokuShaka and Creepy Nuts for not making it into the shelf (lol), and let's talk about some veteran who really deserves some mentioning about like, years since the last time I did this for her! It's such a wild turn, I'm pretty sure I was still rejecting her songs a month ago haha

音楽 The Klassic Note Review
miwa - Soredemo Tada [Single]
Limited Edition Regular Edition
(Eh, no images of her on the cover but rather adequate as you will listen from the music this time around, I suppose)

Origin: You and I should not be unfamiliar with miwa, the singer-songwriter who made waves a decade ago, as a rising new star. So many years later and I dare myself to say this, that she is still most impressive among all the other active artists I know who have had such a long run, did not even keep up with the times and/or I just lost touch with them. Not for her though, she has been great even these past few years. The new single came in as a mention for a drama theme song, an emotional tune, but it quickly made waves due to both the popularity of the credit and the artist herself, which I must say did catch my attention even more as I gave this the formal review. Maybe we talk about what is in this that got me.

(1) Soredemo Tada [Still, Just(...)]
From last chorus:
Still, just being so loved
Just being so loved
Even for a second longer (I) want to laugh together
Still, just (wanting) to convey
Just (wanting) to convey
Those feelings are no long enough to express
Ah (those) thoughts are overflowing
The title clearly references an incomplete sentence, but you won't have too far to look if you listen. If I am not wrong, the drama references a lot about love, in passion and in cooking, and I don't think the lyrics were that far off. Jointly presented by a music composer and miwa-san herself, this song is an emotional tune to make sure the drama is a tearjerker. The melody is rather simple and I would argue a very short chorus till date until you get to the end where the focus would be on, and I really appreciate a simple melody, is what this is all about. Emotional is still an underestimate of what this aims to portray, as the lyrics talk about being together, the unexplainable feelings that just can't be expressed... that just is love, isn't it?
Rating: Lovingly Average

(2) Mahalo [Thank You]
From first chorus (from Hawaiian, where applicable):
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
Blooming smiles (all over), (biding) goodbye
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
Everybody let's all flee together
Accompanying an emotional song comes in a light-hearted and happy song, no surprises there. What is surprising is how this all came around, as I did not prefer the Hawaiian-themed melody and music production here. Nonetheless, I did give it a second chance, and I think light-hearted is the easiest description I can give for what is the carefree miwa-san and her mind when she wrote this song. There isn't much to look at in the lyrics apart from her describing the weather and things to do there in the tropical island far away, and it really feels more tribal and celebratory of a song than just a happy song, in my opinion. Maybe adding in her cute singing did help in making this a joy to listen.
Rating: Joyfully Average

Conclusion: This is a very average, off the mill single. And I think that is a good thing. For starters, the melodies are simple even to the point of plain, yet powerful in itself. Going through this again formally, I have never doubted on how great an overall package this sounds, and I think that is what's important these days. Cut the flair, and bring in the emotions like we wanted, even in the change of era and time. With this, I present to you possibly one of the most emotive singles for the year.

- Aozaki Shouhei, on the Klassic Note

THE PACKAGE
Well, there really isn't much going on with this release, package wise. I assume with miwa's own handwriting (and drawings?) she should have done us a wonder by showing how childish she is (lmao), but of course, I did choose the special gift that came with it. Instead of going for the free (local) shipping option through Amazon Japan which will give us another one of these coveted covers (haha), I ended up going for minimal local shipping through TOWER RECORDS which, like CDJapan which I did think of doing international shipping only to realize it'll burn through my money like water, will feature a postcard with a live photo of miwa-san. *silence* Well, as you can see, I might have missed it, and yeah, this online store here won't inform us if they ran out of stock for those. Welp, I can't get anything, I guess. Not even the handwritten lyrics by miwa-san in the booklet, by the way; The title text you see on the cover and in the booklet are entirely different, as the character "so" was written differently. Haha why though
I don't want to mark out this embarrassment lol, but notice the first character on the large title, and first track. Both are accurate, latter is a more commonly written format.
The former text is credited to miwa-san, by the way.

HELL YEAH LET'S GO FREE STUFF IF YOU APPLY BY END OF MARCH-
(lol)

This shall be it for today! Depending on where I proceed tomorrow morning as a reminder it's a Friday and I'm still on work leave and I'm going to see the doctor again lmao, we will continue with the actual birthday gift for the year, for me. *giggles* Oh no of course it's not Ogura Yui she is not young enough. *laughs* I will see you there if you like cute girls. Mahalo~

P.S.
I did buy a fancy CD player to showcase my music releases so might as well!!
Nice. *thumbs up*

The Klassic Note Review 2024.03

Looks like we are starting the 10th anniversary of officially reviewing fully reviewed music releases with a couple *wink* of singles *sob* to celebrate- Oh, it's March now? Welp February haha also Happy International Women's Day by the way I did not plan for this although we do have women to talk about here today- What, "Soko ni Naru" has a female in it she sings in the songs I'm about to review hehe *dabs*

In the new month though, I can't believe we already have a next review coming in real soon as I plan to give miwa's new single so spoiler alert we are giving the middle finger to RyokuShaka's new single this week haha screw you we need better songs, but maybe ideal songs cannot be our target at this point even after all these years, honestly. Reasonably good singles will be good enough. So will be for miwa's single but heck, let's talk about what will kickstart the year of... hopefully more bite-sized music releases and reviews of reasonably good songs!

Ready, set, go!!

音楽 The Klassic Note Review
Soko ni Naru - Soumonka [Single]
Limited Edition Regular Edition
(I'm just thankful they don't want me to remember the Anime but the artist more, though that's a rather contrasting cover art for the Regular Edition)

Origin: I did not expect to pick up on them honestly, so let's talk a little bit about them. Similar to w.o.d., these guys have been around for a while, and before they get recognition from being an opening theme artist of Anime "Majo to Yajuu", the member count is pretty much the same as the main cast count, consisting of a male and female (with the latter sometimes singing) pair and I assume with them being the essence of this band. Just from this release though I can feel their style and power throughout, and I must say I am not disappointed at the least, but not like I'm so hype I'll be into them, but I definitely think they are cool. We'll talk more about why they are so.

(1) Soumonka [Soumon Poetry*]
From first chorus:
"(Even if you) break and break, (you) still can't reach (it)
The end of ends of such revenge, as if (you) can grab it with (your) hands
Even if (it's) destroyed and destroyed, it's still not enough
And thus, finally arriving at this solidarity will sure make (you) fed up"
I'm pretty sure the title doesn't represent everything else this song offers, but being an opening theme song of an action-packed Anime I am watching, it has to be this hype, isn't it? And I'm glad it was on point on that. From impactful lyrics on the choruses, to the banging rock music style this band represents, it's more fresh than just staple coming from a band I've never heard of before. The lyrics though, if I have to compare to the song title and what love was expanded in expression from these guys, was more like one trying to get back their romance though any way possible even through revenge, desiring and ruining things yet getting nothing in return, which ironically sounds like pure action but in the name of love. I would though, complain about the sudden stops on the end of the song (which was brought into the Anime cut also) which is kind of annoying even listening to this for a while now, but overall this is still something of praise.
Rating: Powerful Average

(2) Hokoronde Hazereba [If (It) Breaks And Explodes]
From first chorus:
"Even if (it happens) for how many times (I) will not forgive
That is the taste of (such an) outrageous sin
In any case (I) will be pitied
Just break already"
I never thought I will hear indie rock music especially when one drops into a major music label to sing for Anime, but they have proven me wrong. The moment their instrumentals drop after the intro, I was convinced that I have to give this single thanks to this B-side. They do remind me of indie bands I've heard over the years, and this rough style with its own quirks sure is making this as familiar and as niche as it sounds, don't get me wrong. The lyrics also spell a different tale, though of the same romance-like scenario as the A-side, which sure is interesting to listen to. It's like love has turned bad and taken a different form I've never seen before. I'm just glad the melody is typical and it's very palatable in my opinion.
Rating: Impactful Average

Conclusion: This is not the best thing out there, but I like it. I might have liked it more now after reviewing it, making this sound like a great start to what else this band might have to offer. We shall see, Soko ni Naru, you have piqued my interest. Their rushed style may make me tired to listen to them often, but heck, if you want something of impact, I know what I can recommend you here and now, you will not be disappointed.

*All sources (and I mean ChatGPT lol) point to some traditional Chinese poetry in pairs expressing love and friendship. The Japanese know of this?

WE ARE NOT DONE YET!! Finally, we can fall in love, for real. *giggles*

音楽 The Klassic Note Review
Asakura Momo - Sweet Essence [Single]
Limited Edition Regular Edition
(All bless the gods of love in giving me the close-ups like I demanded bless me a girlfriend now pls)

Origin: Our dear singing princess of a voice actress idol Asakura Momo is back with another single, we might only be a year since I've reviewed one of her singles and I have been all these years ever since she started her solo music career back in 2016, is still somehow making waves best for singing love songs which her fans adore, and I honestly still think she best excels at. After going through a round of expressing other styles and somehow avoiding the topic of love, with this and a drama credit to date (which she stars in, it's a thing), it seems like we can never get enough of Mocho here. Let's see what makes her a great Valentine as it was intended for release on that date.

(1) Sweet Essence
From first chorus:
"All the way (in) surprises! It's a secret
It's a special day after all
Words (I) normally won't say
(I) enclose (them) with a card

Recalling once again, that day with that excitement
Do you remember it too?
What day is it today?
What day is it today?
Hey, don't forget, forever and ever"
If I say this is the love song of the year, you will make fun of me. But I will say that it's rather appropriate for the occasion. Of course, first impressions aren't that great maybe distracted by the music video, but I'm a listening guy, so as I sit down to listen to this, the lyrics do sound within me, and I think overall the words along with the prowess that is Asakura Momo carrying the image of love on this solo music career, she sure is making this a lot more palatable than a bunch of bitter chocolate. The verses still feels long after listening to it for a while, the chorus feels rather off at the end, but the melody overall is fast-paced, and the lyrics are your girlfriend reminiscing about Love Day, so that kind of rounds it up. Have you forgotten those feelings already? I hope not, your girl is waiting.
Rating: Lovingly Average

(2) Shiawasette Kaite [Writing Down** Happiness]
From first chorus:
"Writing down happiness, how do you read that
Not being too particular is ideal
If adding Furigana (readings) makes (it) enjoyable, (it) makes the ordinary special
That's why believing is winning
Change all common knowledge to the extent of being free
You (in this busy present and future)
Splendidly shining
Those feelings won't stop at eight-tenths (80%)"
In the lyrics, we transition from remembering the special days to talking about enriching the everyday life, and your girlfriend has it all. Coming in from a short drama series theme song (which I assume is to make this release have some credit) about the main girl (starring Asakura Momo herself) talking about food bringing them happiness in the hectic work life, I think this is what this song is all about. The pop style sure makes this song stand out, the chorus is too easy-listening and addicting I really can't get it out of my head for weeks, and the lyrics are ironically reminiscent of the glorious days where she sings love songs for her single B-sides and they just make you feel in bliss. That's all you will need from this song, I will not say much. Okay, maybe the lyrics can be rather long-winded, but it's also to talk about the stuff she will do for that certain someone, so that doesn't have to be ideal in my opinion.
Rating: Blissfully Average

Conclusion: This is a cute single, I will not deny. I would even go so far to say this is a love-ly single, as with many of Asakura Momo's songs have presented to us for many years. This is just another step forward and I'm pleased they did not stop on capitalizing this, because I do think she has potential in singing love songs with her adorable voice, this is already worth a recommend. It doesn't stand out in the crowd, but it's worth a listen, even if you aren't a fan. Maybe having some drama credit is what it takes to make her get noticed, just like people falling in love.

- Aozaki Shouhei, on the Klassic Note

**More figuratively expressed as "crafting" or "planning" as hinted by the lyrics

(Yeah, the last word of my intro to this single, get it? "Date"? Because that's me with her if I ever get to- Stop dreaming already, me. Haha *sigh*)

THE PACKAGE
Damn, this colour contrast is a little extreme considering both of them released on Valentine's Day.
It's like the cute girl gave you friendly chocolates and the other girl stuffed like, frog meat in theirs lol
Okay okay I think we can actually talk about the packages now. That Soko ni Naru single was easy, there weren't any special gifts or freebies even though I was informed about a livestream event where you can pre-order a signed copy of the single... which I refrained from getting lol I already bought it from Amazon Japan which provided free local shipping at that time, so there was that. NO WE ARE NOT GOING FOR TWO COPIES IT WAS A MISTAKE WITH PORNOGRAFFITTI 14 YEARS AGO JUST STOP *laughs*
As you can see, there's a chocolate mint theme here lol
Let's talk about Mocho's single then! Damn am I already running out of options when I decided to give this 3 weeks ago, but maybe it's because the sales were good and demand was high, that I instead ended up with the bromide photo from Toranoana instead of the other ones I would have liked: Shinseido and TSUTAYA RECORDS (best portrait in the set) were great but damn do I not have the mood to sign up for it since I don't have a Japanese phone number; Rakuten Books, HMV Japan and Animate (best visual) because they were already out of stock by the time the single officially released on Valentine's Day; Also Sony Music Shop and Gamers (best kawaii because close-up lmao) as I see them stock disappear in a couple of days I was still deciding, and then ended up with this one, seeing as I was pushed back by fans who knew what they were doing. Hey, not everyone is like me who waits for release date and not just pre-order a First Press music release. That's just not how this world works, dude. *giggles*
Just to showcase the new CD player I have now.
Speakers bought separately btw this disc looks great though!
Another reason why I would have chosen this instead of going further down the line to get... anything without her eyes on camera lol, is also because in my birthday month of... I'm not going to try to type again but it's last month (haha) where online stores in Japan like to give out vouchers, and Toranoana (instead of Gamers *hmph*) gave a voucher which would offset shipping... if I added something worth 150yen. Problem is, there isn't anything this cheap (lol first world problems) and I ended up buying some comic book plastic covers which... read yesterday's post, died on arrival. *laughs* It didn't make this package cheaper though, I still had to pay for shipping, though slightly lesser. *silence* I make bad choices in life, what of it. *laughs*
Just a bit more of MOCHOOOOOOO~!!
Suki haha

Yes, it's a Friday so TGIF but also, it's the fortnightly imouto gaming livestream so OF COURSE I watched that before I did all of this. *giggles* Seeing her play a Kanji reading game is surely giving me deja vu as I do up these reviews as all the lyricists here are testing my Japanese after months of not doing music reviews? BRUH. *laughs* Anyways, the game definitely helped me to understand not new or obscure words which can be read if you know the syllables, but those before Kanji was adopted ie. we know how to pronounce fairly well in daily life yet have no idea how to read. It's like I'm not young enough to get what "wakai" is traditionally written in Kanji, just as an example. Then again I suck at Japanese a decade coming in so what else is new. *laughs* I did double-check the dictionaries online though and it's not correct...? FAKE GAME lol see you this weekend for more posts.

P.S. Okay NOW I can take a jab at the lyrics from Mocho's single because damn, if you lock me up and zip my mouth I will die in 24 hours from not being able to talk about it haha please don't or at least put Mocho in the same room with me too *dabs*

Okay, the A-side has a part of the lyrics in the bridge when it slowed down... because "that day being in the metro holding a heart-shaped box" really sounded like it was very accurately describing the scene from her 5th single cover and music video (no really, I'm not joking this is not a coincidence it's the same lyricist they knew of this) (yeah I even remember it's from the 5th haha NERD), and the B-side described a lot of activities delivering happiness in the 2nd verse but I didn't know that "in places where (you) don't feel well (she) can pull one off" which you know, double-meaning. *giggles* Seriously though Mocho you want to be my girlfriend now? *laughs* She is reporting me to the cops for sure.

P.P.S. Yes this post is published at 2222hr this is not a coincidence too hehe

The Klassic Note Song Awards 2023

🎊WELCOME TO THE KLASSIC NOTE SONG AWARDS 2023!!🎊
I'm Aozaki Shouhei, Klassic Note's only listener and judge. It's that time of the year again, where I sit down in front of my PC at the end of the year to commend and rank the songs I listen over the year. This year is a year of change, but unlike what was with 15th year anniversary last year, I have marked this year as a year of more drastic change. Following artists I've liked over the year but have not performed well will be shelved over time, as many have announced their hiatus or even brought their music careers into an abrupt end. On the other hand, I am more focused on giving new, prominent artists which I would have not followed just because of a hit or two. Nonetheless, we will find more artists to listen to, as I continue to branch out even further towards styles of my interest, being more strict in reviewing releases and avoiding subpar songs here and then. This will hopefully help to bring forward a paradigm shift towards melodies I would prefer more regardless of presentation, its lyrics, or even its style, following our new motto of "Searching For The New Classic".

As usual, I will state this every year and I will state it again, the results below do not fully represent the many songs I listen to for the year. Past year songs are typically suppressed since recommending them is not as trending as the ones who are presented for this year, so I will withhold in promoting them, though when they are, it's always because they have made more than impact in my life. New artists are still sprouting as they seem, sadly being critical of them unlike how the earlier artists I listen to, would not help in their cause, but as to stay with my motto and criticism, I will continue to find ones that I like, if they still stand to impress. Overall, this is just a fraction of what is to come, and what I think of them songs and artists for the year.

The results below will be split into six segments, with the first two covering statistics and analysis of the songs given this year and how they fare. Diagrams will be shown in some segments to give a better overall picture rather than just displaying tables of data. Other segments include commending artists and songs that have stood out among the crowd, and awards for recipients who deserve more attention. Finally, I'll conclude on with The Top 20 and an audio edit of them by yours truly, so to give you a better idea of what songs truly represent the year around when it comes to music I listen for the year.

(Results finalised on 31/12/2023)

統計 Klassic Note Statistics
This year, I have given a total of 246 songs over the past 12 months. I've spent more time on each release longer compared to past years in recognition of their efforts even listening to them the second time in a year, and find comfort in giving familiar artists and new artists I picked up alike. The Internet might have helped with exposure even more, and with music streaming services it has become easier than ever to give any recommendation I see them on YouTube and/or Apple Music, hopefully providing than enough bandwidth to listen to classics of newly found artists and their new songs too. It definitely did not stop the momentum of giving new songs though; I am just giving more songs per release, more often than ever.

Firstly, I break down the songs to who sings them and sort them by artist composition and gender, giving a good look into a usual heavy bias of female solo artists singing good songs, also known as the Vocals Popularity Survey. For this year, Female Solo vocals have risen to the yearly average of 1.3 to 1 against Male Solo vocals, which shows a nice balance of mainstream artists against female solo artists for the year.

Then, we have the Song Rating Integrity Survey. Initially taken as an experimental analysis in Klassic Note to fix my biased opinions of what is a good song, now it is used as a guide to follow past years judgement criteria so my judgement don't go too far off the perpendicular. As I give further detailed analysis to the many songs defaulted to the generic 4-star category, this survey then is an attempt to give a better insight into how most of the songs are rated. It is also became the new benchmark in recent years in pushing me to give more 5-star songs which were then based on early impression which is not possible now with maturity of my song judgement bias. As you can see, there is higher tendency to give more 4-star songs as songs are rated slightly above average instead of promoting them to 5-stars.

Thirdly, we have the generic statistics of the songs of the year. These include language (for those with a vocalist), year of release (old songs can appear in the list as far as 2005 for the year), Anime songs (because when I say "sometimes" on Twitter I meant this) and B-side analysis for singles which is a direct representation of proving that songs which are good need not be their release's topic songs, and we should give more criticism and praise to songs not under intentional spotlight.

Last but not least, we have the Song Appetite Report. The chart represents how many songs I've given every month, and show peak and trough periods typically based on release month dependent on the music industry or periods of time where I just want to give more or less songs. I would say despite the difficulties and therefore delays in releasing new songs this particular year, many still were released in due time, and therefore did not miss much in terms of leaving an impression in Klassic Note, and I am thankful for that. Exceptions do apply though, where certain releases are still out of reach with the return of love event-only releases.

Here is how the new songs fared this year:

>> Female Solo is the most popular vocal style in the songs of 2023.

歌の一日 Song of The Day
Every day is unique as it is special; Songs that surface in our minds will set us in a mood and drive our everyday lives. From waking up to going to work, arriving home and going to sleep, there's always a different melody that will pop up in my mind from listening to the huge amount of songs within and in past years. I would confidently say that my mood for the year could be summarised with the songs I'm listening to every single day.

And that's why we have a tie this year so congrats Kitou Akari and Kroi for being the most memorable Songs of the Year in 2023!!

The first two tables below show what are the most popular songs I've listened for the year and for each month. The last two tables show the most popular songs to wake up and sleep to to give a different perspective as to how they potentially can feel if you start and end the day with maybe. Criteria are subject to conditions in sleeping habits, mood, and mostly due to songs I've listened recently during certain times of the day.

Starting from 2019, Song of The Day has been transformed into a rank-based system, where every mention pushes you up one rank so that rank sharing will make sense. The results shouldn't show much of a difference though, but it will more accurately reflect on the position of songs within.

Starting from 2023, multiple Songs of The Day have been reintroduced ever since the start of the Song Awards 15 years ago, defining vital points of the day where if criteria are met (eg. without listening to songs, songs will appear in one's mind), they are worthy of record.

リリース上位 Single & Album Rankings
Klassic Note may be all about the songs, but what is with songs if they aren't released in some form? I say that though, but with the rise of digital singles and how music is distributed more often through digital platforms in smaller doses instead of coming up with physical releases, it's always in my comfort to listen to albums every once in a while then be committed to their constant promotions. Many releases performed better than ever as I spend more time with them this year, and I continue to give more songs beyond the one or two topic songs with a music video. Many artists are going for more than one good album in the year with the world opening up, and we do see this year some are adding a couple of singles and/or new songs from time to time within the year. Regardless of their approach, I will still give them due attention as long as I know of them. Limited Edition Only singles are great but sadly does not meet my requirement of Review, but I will still talk put them in just because they are worthy of mention.

In Klassic Note, top singles are determined by (1) whether they are in Klassic Note Review ie. all songs of the single have been given and is not digital only release and (2) how good they fare in impression, so ratings come to place. Details for giving these singles shall not be discussed further since there is The Klassic Note Review for your reference. Top albums are determined mostly by how many songs have been given in it, so best album have a natural advantage if I've been listening to the artist for years, and mini-albums tend to get an edge on these due to low song count too but they have been put lower in priority to allow full length albums to shine.

From Klassic Note 2023, I will also annotate special features of these releases (Limited Edition Only, Digital Only) in order to better represent their prominence in the ranks, and that smaller releases in albums, for example, will get smaller priority over full album which require more effort (subject to the amount of new songs added) so the latter will be considered first.

Congratulations to Uesaka Sumire's single for Anime "Nagatoro-san" and Natsukawa Shiina's 3rd album for best releases for Klassic Note 2023!!

表彰 Commendations
In Klassic Note there are Awards; And then, there are Commendations. Commendations are thing that are worth mentioning but not necessarily in competition since it can be unique in circumstance. That, or I want to credit them as many of them as possible and it doesn't exactly qualify as a regular award. Many listed may be repeats, but this is the place where I give proper recognition to certain things that stood out among the others.

Congrats to Amber's for giving me music videos to remember I wish I could put them in more, also Omoinotake, I can't believe these love stories made me more than interested in their songs more than ever. This and many others easily show the power of music videos which are all the more important at a time like such a medium and the Internet are the best conditions to promote new songs today.

Commendations are generally given to topics which stand out on their own with unique features (eg. terrible English, same song title) known as Song Commendations, releases that I reviewed and/or are outstanding known as Release Commendations, artists which may or may not be singing this year also known as Artist Commendations, and honours for (promotional) music videos which excelled in impressions also known as Video Commendations.

Instead of giving them as awards, Klassic Note here compliments videos which stand out better than their music, sometimes better than not, in order to give better representation and thus impression to their audio listeners. And so, I commend and also criticise (a bit) on those, as you can see below too. Many of the music videos can be found online too, so be sure to check those out for yourself. I'll post the links to get you started.

Awards
One of the most important things that built the foundation of this Song Awards are of course, the Awards themselves. They have also been historically the toughest to decide every year apart from the Top 20 itself, which shows how much thought is put into figuring out the distinct feels of all the songs I give for the year, and how important they are compared to all of the others above. As with previous years, it has always been a challenge to get the right songs to fit the Awards and what they should represent, and as much as I try I still hardly feel for some of these songs which are worthy of their titles, especially pertaining to certain emotions and moods. Regardless, I have made my decision, so here are the results.

Congratulations to Homecomings for THE CONTRIBUTOR AND THE ARTIST awards because damn, have I been immersed too much in their songs for the year, especially from their indie days. THE MUSIC award also met its strongest competition for the year, as immersion into Jazz Funk group Sai have made me intoxicated on occult styles I normally would not give despite PHONO TONES and SPECIAL OTHERS releasing albums to please for the year.

The Award titles mean exactly unless stated otherwise, which are as follows:
  • THE CHARASON represents all songs from the Anime and Game genres so to give more songs recognition on how good and/or diverse they are (CV refers to "Character Voice" ie. the actual voice actor behind the role)
  • THE IDOLISM awards idol songs (sung by voice actress who became solo artists mostly) which have been on the rise and the award goes to the one with judgement possible to be independent of usual criteria eg. melody, music style
  • THE INSPIRATIONAL awards songs which spark motivation and/or creativity for me, encouraging and pushing me along in life
  • THE NUMBER ONE SONG OF THE YEAR is based on SONG OF THE DAY results, and the Award is presented to the best here
  • THE SINGLE and THE ALBUM are based on RELEASE RANKINGS, and the award is presented to the best of each category here
The nominees are excluded from the list due to presentation space constraints.

20曲上位 The Top 20
Last but not least, we have the song rankings. Every year, I try my best to showcase Klassic Note in the most diverse way possible, hopefully with a good balance of what I truly love and representation of what the year means for Klassic Note in 2023. And in these songs I recommend, many have left an impression, some I cannot miss putting them in just because, and others I think they are genuinely worth a mention. It was hard to come up with the list as usual, as there have been many dramatic changes to when I initially thought of this, but now that the results are out, I'm not going to think too much into it and hope this is adequate to show what Klassic Note 2023 is after a year in the making.

Congratulations to Homecomings once again for changing my year for the better or worse, that I must put them up to be the #1 song in Klassic Note! Emotional is still my drill for the year, nothing much has changed, but the rankings did put in more lively and positive tunes to remember, and that is still what is growing inside me, I assure you, for the better.

In Klassic Note, The Top 20 will include certain conflicts in rank number as some of the songs have to share the same rank due to my lack of criteria to differentiate between them, but is also a ingenious method to show certain trends or similarity within topics and timeframes, to a smaller extent. So do not be surprised to see up to 25 songs every year on this supposedly "Top 20" list depending on my preferences.

Below is an audio preview with timestamps of The Top 20 of Klassic Note 2023, for your listening pleasure. (Tip: Click on any row on the table above to skip to that track!)

Here are my thoughts about this year's Top 20 as elaborated from above, in a nutshell:
  • Homecomings position in the Top 20 list has already been cemented since February with me deep into their indie releases, and the new album definitely helped in topping up that fuel I would have never expected to deal with. Still, they deserve every bit of it, they have the unique emotional feels that no other band can achieve, it has been a few years since their last and I have been wanting to give them something, and I'm glad I can get into this over time.
  • The next few ranks are my tribute to the artists who made an impression this year alone, including now regular mol-74, Kroi, and even Kodama Hikari is in the ranks.
  • I would have thought of putting Ikimonogakari in a better rank preferably above my own bias Natsukawa Shiina who killed it with the new album this year, I still think the latter deserved to be up there purely because they gave us a rather simple melody to satisfy, I will say that much.
  • Ryokuoushoku Shakai dropped real bad this year considering their overall assessment even including their rather unimpressive though unique new album this year, I was even struggling on considering what to give them this year because seriously, even the summer song did not manage to impress me for that long. The same is to say for regular artists in my Collection including SHE'S and LUCK LIFE who have been downplayed, and cinema staff who have been left on the lurch this year just because.
  • This year's double ranks are for fanservice I did not want to leave Fuchigami Mai alone so I slotted in Kitou Akari (or maybe it's vice versa), and I don't know if putting miwa long with emotion giant and veteran aiko-san would mean anything but hey, both respectable artists I would put my finger on, so you are welcome, ladies.
  • Ironically because of the awards above, one would think otherwise I would put Uesaka Sumire with Kitou Akari but my biggest concern about giving her more recognition after I presented her the best single award for the year, is that is a very average release and because of the single containing more tracks (and I gave them all), that her subpar singing would otherwise take shape in the ranks. This is as far as I will praise herm honestly.

And that is all for Klassic Note this year; I hope you enjoyed looking through these results, giving some of them as listen, and enjoyed as much as I did. If you were here to give yourself a chance and listen to the above snippet of what I've listened to in 2023, you're welcome for the glimpse into my music listening experience for the year. If you have given any of them a listen afterwards - even just one of them - it will make me happy. The legacy of Klassic Note has moved ahead once again and with the world outside changing in perspective, I'm still happy to be able to share my thoughts about music every year, how much I have experienced in the world of music by the week, and dedicating the time and dedication to make all of this happen once again. Also, do not forget what I did for #KN15YEARS, Klassic Note's 15th anniversary project, so do check that out.

See you again and have a happy new year! And I will ever, as I will always be, "Searching For The New Classic".

- Aozaki Shouhei, on the Klassic Note

The Klassic Note Review 2023.12 + Omake (from 2018)

Hello, good evening. You might be real surprised that why I'm here doing another Klassic Note Review (still of this year's songs) instead of focusing on preparation of the Song Awards which I hear is the buzz of the town in this blog *giggles*, but wait, this is as important as that even though I'm pretty sure these three singles will not be talked about a single bit for the Awards later this week.

I'm sorry YUKI-san but this is definitely to compensate for the decade of listening to your songs, I promise you. Let's talk about what I missed, shall we?

THE ORIGIN
It all started when I decided to listen to some YUKI-san songs a month ago after listening to her in a rock festival live performance. Yes, she sang pop songs but this is typical of rock festivals now they just put idol groups in them anyways (haha), but it was defnitely a song I have not heard before. And as I recall, I did listen to a best album from her, but with her experience in the music industry with dozens of songs under her name, it is not then surprising that the best album I listened back in 2018 to did not contain all of her classics. And thus, I embarked on the journey to listen to some of them, including finding out that songs I listened before did have separate, and - you didn't see this wrongly - single-track CD releases because this isn't the digital age and the CDs are still sold in Japan even today. Yes, even up to 10 years ago, which we will be talking about today.

Dude, this will also be the HARDEST I will go to understanding lyrics because damn, is YUKI-san quite a... how should I say, inspirational lyricist herself. *giggles* You will get it when I show you what's up in a bit. All the years of translating lyrics has built me up for this lmao

音楽 The Klassic Note Review
YUKI - Nagai Yume [Single]
[The title has definitely nothing to do with this image, so don't ask me why YUKI-san is like this]

Origin: It all started from a live performance, so let me talk a bit of what I felt when I saw that. Think of this as like a deja vu experience every time I have to encounter YUKI outside of Anime; She just wears some flashy outfit like she does decades ago, walks into stage and starts vibing. This is what I felt when I had to give this song and this single. Though this song came back in the year of 2005, it still is very relevant in terms of style and presentation, and we shall talk about that in detail.

(1) Nagai Yume [Long Dream]
From first chorus:
"Bye bye long dream, (though) how do (I) go over there?
(I) will get lost, guide you along
Bye bye long dream, someday (it) comes full circle
Teach me the next move (up your sleeve)"
As the lyrics will explain to you without much sense because YUKI's lyrics writing is basically that, it's just a description of random stuff in a dream. Does it make sense or not? It doesn't matter. But how you can vibe to it is more important than I realized as I heard of this for the first time. The pop beats hit every cell in your body, and I think that is all that matters. The music video definitely presented it in a different light with the animation, but heck, it's up to the imagination at this point. It's a dream, remember? The ongoing beats are long though which is its likely downside, maybe the sometimes off-note singing, but I dreamt longer than this, so I won't blame her for this, to be honest.
Rating: Decently Average

Conclusion: I'm sure to recommend this song, but if you are here to support her even after all these years, then yes, you can still pick this up. It's a symbol, I would argue, more than just a dream, to still obtain and listen to one of these at this time and age, but what am I to say? It's just that good.

Next up!

音楽 The Klassic Note Review
YUKI - Sukitte Nan Darou… Namida / Tonari no Metro [Single]
[Crying humans? Philanthropists (or women) be like]

Origin: Ah yes, this single from when I heard it in the best album back in 2018. Just like when I reviewed best albums, I normally just give the first A-side to this double A-side just because and we will talk about it detail later, so I did not care too much to trace which single it was from besides finding the music video, perhaps. But years later in, just as I had a resurgence to listen to her older songs, I decided to give this single a chance and listened to the other song in this release, and I am pleased. How pleased? Maybe I should tell you more.

(1) Sukitte Nan Darou... Namida [What is love... (Sheds a tear)]
From first verse:
"In bad times, (one's) experience goes up
(Experience) the bitter love
"The important things, those aren't (that important)"
We will live on, that's why (we) are happy"
Wow am I so glad I get to talk about this very song. Despite having a rather beat-like melody it is soft, despite having motivating lyrics it is actually about female expression, and despite sounding like a pop song, its parts are actually more varied than the usual format. This is how the song got me among the many other songs she had on her best album back then, and boy does it still leave a lingering taste even after all these years. The music video too, and if that isn't a greater hint of what the song represents, then the lyrics written by YUKI herself might help. Female power, dude, it is emotive as it is great.
Rating: Feministic Above Average

(2) Tonari no Metro
From first verse:
"Stuffing a magnificent doodle into my backpack, riding the metro,
Assisted by sentimentality, gazing at that sky dyed in blue.
Yearning for a modern girl, her scarf fluttered."
Being a commercial song for Tokyo's metro that many years ago probably made this a better case than it should be, but behold, this is a relaxing song and more catchy then I would have ever expected. If I did ever listen to this I wonder why did I not give it, but now, it served as a journey of relaxation with its chill melody and positive lyrics as it should be, and did I hesitate to even dislike this. How can I, when it's about trains that I have taken a fancy to, not like the acoustics that made this song so palatable? For this, I will only say good things about it.
Rating: Cruising Average

Conclusion: This single has the overall package of what you would expect from music artist YUKI, acoustic emotional songs she sings from time to time, and her overall image represented in slow to moderate pop beats. I think this is a rather good example of what she sounds like, even if this single is from 2015 and I listened to them all about 5 years since I started to know of it. Whether it represents something further than her artistic inspiration, I'll leave it to you to figure it out.

- Aozaki Shouhei, on the Klassic Note

OMAKE!! So I don't have to time travel to do this in another post lol I have to write another intro though- And that's why I don't want to review single-track releases? It doesn't fit in the format haha

音楽 The Klassic Note Review
YUKI - Daredemo Lonely [Single]
[Why be lonely when you have music and a flower dress? Real cool though]

Origin: This song and single, in comparison to her usual catalogue of songs, might feel normal to be frank at least it is to me, but damn this song is such a good one, it's hard to miss. Pretty much everything, and I really mean everything is so normal, the only weird thing is how can I can like it so much. As with vibe master YUKI here, it is no surprise they are making sure this song hits as much as it can at the time when this went popular, and boy did it leave an impression on me years later even when I heard it on the best album. Let's talk about what drew this song to me.

(1) Daredemo Lonely [Anyone (Can Get) Lonely]
From intro:
"Laughing while enjoying (oneself), anyone (can get) lonely; Yearning for love(?), sorry
The starts are waiting, waiting, waiting"
Alright, the music video I think is the best representation of what this song is, even long after I have heard of the song and added it to my music library. It's the dancing, if you didn't get what I mean. The lyrics also kind of explain why, that everything about love and people around and dancing it away, people can get lonely. As I said, this isn't your usual YUKI song mainly because it's not abnormal: This is a solid tune to dance to, the lyrics also echo in your mind so much you would think this is the remix instead of the remixes in this single...  I am already dancing to this as I'm writing this, no joke.
Rating: Full of Vibes Above Average

Conclusion: What else is there to say? Maybe the two remixes in this single will convince you to buy this release. If not, then just vibing to this song alone is more than enough fuel to get anyone going in the morning, I would argue. If you thought being lonely can't sound this good, you can take it to YUKI to making this as great of a wake up call as she can make it.

- Aozaki Shouhei, on the Klassic Note

This is definitely a new level of awkward in terms of review format and writing but also because I didn't notice 5 years ago that one of these can be reviews so *shrugs*

MOVING ON!!!

THE PACKAGE
What a combination, really.
*laughs*

These singles are simple in design, not much flair, and yes, it is rather the cover art featuring the artist herself that might stand out once in a while. Or that drawing of a woman which I assume is also her. *laughs* Anyhow, I'm not aiming for anything else, this is just for keepsakes, so I'll take these as it is. I don't think the application forms will work after this long so (lol)

The bottom one just had white as the back of their inlet booklet, so I flipped it around lol

Oh this was sold in conjunction of an upcoming album at that time.
Maybe I listen to that next.

This shall be all- ALL HAIL FRIDAY NIGHT~!!! *dances* You know what that is if you play (or watch people play) the Yakuza (Like a Dragon) video games. *giggles* But this week is far from over for me, and as unintentionally planned thanks to the arrival of the recent package, we will continue the not-so-normal weekend by doing the final (for this season, relax) Fanfiction for the year, followed by the Klassic Note Song Awards results! If you would excuse me I will continue to prepare for them, so see you then. *wink*

P.S. And that's why I think like, artists like YUKI and Cocco among many other ones, are the kind that are truly free in making music. You know, they are the free spirits who sing and/or write songs/lyrics because it's in their mind, not to write popular songs to make money. Though the latter could be said the same on them, but through the songs I can feel, that it's also more of the former, and that's fascinating enough for me. *thumbs up*
