Why is it called education if most of it is scrutiny?

I mean, really. Probably due to egoistic tutors, or peers maybe? I'm just getting this feeling that asking something real dumb will just get me beaten up. Not that I've not asked but most I know do not have that patience. And that's not a good thing.
